NDIS Counselling Cairns
The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) is a programme launched in July 2013, initially known as Disability Care Australia. This scheme is administered by the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and run by the Australian Government for all states and territories. Individuals aged 65 and below with permanent or significant disability are supported by the program, Funding is allocated to individuals or their primary caregivers. The person receiving the care or the carer will choose where the funding will be allocated for the person with disability’s needs. The NDIS initiative was established to support persons with disability, their families, and their primary caregivers. When NDIS is fully rolled out, the NDIS will be able to support up to 460,000 Australians. This is a program funds persons with disability and is expected to be in full operation nationally in 2020. NDIS services and counsellors are now available in Cairns.
There is an estimated 4.3 million Australians who have disabilities. With NDIS in place, Australians will be provided with the necessary support they need for a better quality of life. The priority of the NDIS is to ensure that persons with disability get the support they need to ensure that they, along with their families and carers, live their lives to the fullest.
The NDIS will make a huge impact on Australian cities, specifically those who reside in Cairns. The programme supports the social, cultural, and economic thriving of Australian cities. Apart from the needs of persons with disability being supported by the government, their psychosocial well-being is also being taken into consideration. They have counsellors and therapists who provide support and enable them to live as independently as possible. The programme also ensures that the persons with disability have a safe and productive home living – giving them the means to do some tasks for themselves, providing them easy access to the services that they need, and counselling them on their personal goals and life plans. The NDIS personnel works with the clients to produce a plan that best suit their needs and ensures that they can achieve their goals for self-fulfillment by providing them means to be capable of independence, to get involved in the community, to receive quality education, to be employed, and to practice wellness given their existing condition.
The method of NDIS is to provide individualised support services for persons with disability in Australia. NDIS provide support in three areas – Core Supports, Capacity Building, and Capital Support.
Core Supports include the everyday consumable items such as continence aids, personal care assistance, social and community participation, and transportation funding. Simply put, these are the basic needs of someone with a disability. Capacity Building is intended to build the person with disability’s independence by giving them ways and means to manage their own life. This is a form of emotional support for the client by making them feel that they are capable even with their physical limitations. Capital Support is budget intended for assistive technology and home or vehicle modifications. This support provision gives participants sense of independence through technological intervention. All of these are vital to ensure that the individualised support needed from NDIS are given to all the clients under the programme,
With Capacity Building as one of the core areas of the NDIS, counselling is one of the support provisions given to persons with disability. The clients are assigned with a licensed counsellor to provide guidance on personal, psychological, or social challenges brought about by the disability. The aim is for the client to be able to relate to individuals, groups, and communities for a better mental health condition.
The NDIS-registered counsellors in Cairns are trained to assist persons with disability who require emotional support on their problems. Counsellors are more focused on providing general therapy to clients in the following areas: personal issues, family coaching, marriage counselling, goal setting, problem-solving, among others. On a given situation, a counsellor will aid them by providing skills to help them deal with the challenges they come across in life. They also use previous experiences and findings in existing studies and incorporate these in their actual work.
Positive Moods employs a person-centred approach for their counselling services. This method helps clients to achieve a sense of purpose, growth, and accomplishment. With this approach, the clients of Positive Moods can build skills and contribute to the society. Their disabilities are not seen as a liability. Instead, it raises awareness that persons with disability are capable of being productive and are valuable assets.
The person-centred approach requires empathy, understanding, and compassion while ensuring confidentiality of information being disclosed from the counsellor. This encourages that clients can freely express themselves without the fear of being judged. The support and encouragement coming from the counsellor can bring about self-confidence to someone who has a disability.
Positive Moods offer face-to-face counselling and ensures that the clients are given the option to do this in the comfort of their homes. Cairns residents who are subscribed to the NDIS program need not travel long distances and can be visited by their counsellors at their place of residence. Travelling for a person with disability may sometimes cause stress, especially to the elderly because of the physical challenges to the person and logistics concerns for the primary caregiver.
Counselling offers persons with disabilities the feeling to be accepted and supported without judgement. Positive Moods aims to provide that environment to its clients as moods and feelings impact the way persons with disability cope with their situation. Sometimes, these individuals may feel unfair having the need to face several obstacles physically and emotionally.
It is of great benefit to Australians, especially to Cairns residents, to have NDIS rolled out. Persons with disability will have easy access to the support and services they need, whether it’s physical or emotional. They also deserve a near-to-normal and improved quality of life.
