The government’s goal is to give people with a disability the utmost attention and support they need to live a comfortable and meaningful life. For this reason the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) was founded. NDIS offers people living in assisted accommodation different options for managing their disability, thus empowering the individual.

What is the NDIS?

NDIS provides individualised support packages to eligible people with a disability.  The support also extends to the participant’s families and the carers. NDIS aims to help people with a disability to set goals and achieve them by:

  • Encouraging social and economic participation

  • Increasing their independence

  • Providing high-quality supports.

The NDIS funding offers support in education, employment, social engagement, independence, health and well-being and living arrangements. The funding may include assistance with:

  • The daily activities of the participant like going to the shops

  • Transportation for those unable to get around by themselves, allowing greater exposure to social activities

  • Employment opportunities

  • Help maintaining the cleanliness and neatness of their homes

  • Any design modifications required to their their homes

  • Mobility equipment and vehicle modifications tailored to their needs

  • Therapeutic supports including behaviour support

There are several NDIS providers across the country including Positive Moods.

Positive Moods is a group of NDIS registered psychologists and counsellors based in Brisbane, Queensland. Psychologists at Positive Moods possess a high-level of expertise in handling people with disabilities. They encourage positive changes and cultivate a sense of self-awareness to help participants improve their lives and social interaction. They value every participant’s capabilities and offer psychological care using a non-judgemental approach. Transportation and accommodation are identified gaps in the market of disabled people in Queensland.

Positive Moods provides in-home counselling services if needed, to ensure the regular attendance of the participants in the comfort of their homes. The in-home services make it easier for participants to access better care.

Setting and Achieving Goals

NDIS is designed for people with a disability to live a better quality of life by identifying their goals. Goals are an important component of NDIS as they give the participant a purpose and direction.

Goals may include improving social interactions and relationships, cultivating independence, gaining employment or furthering education. Goals should be as specific as possible to help the NDIS provider cater to the needs of the individual participant. The ECEI Coordinator, LAC or NDIA planner helps the participant by discussing goals they want to achieve or any unmet needs they would like addressed.

They can be short-term, medium term and/or long-term goals:

  • Short-term goals, or steps, can be achieved within 12 months;

  • Medium to long-term goals can take several years to achieve.

The participant, along with their coordinator, identify the short term goals needed to achieve their medium to long term goals.

People with a disability are not exempt from setting big life goals for themselves. Positive Moods fosters an approach that is conducive to setting and achieving life goals. The setting and achieving of goals are empowering for people with disabilities. It can make them stronger emotionally, physically and mentally. Positive Moods enables the participants overcome barriers that stop them from dreaming big.

Overcoming barriers that hinder growth and big changes in the participant’s life is the utmost priority of Positive Moods. We believe that the first step in achieving goals and becoming better is to conquer the internal barriers before tackling external. Overcoming outside stressors without overcoming internal struggle is a band aide approach and will not work in the long term.

As the participant becomes stronger and more empowered, achieving their life goals is not as impossible as they first seem, despite the challenges they need to overcome.

Therapeutic Support

NDIS registered institutions should provide therapeutic support to the participants to help them gain independence, become more self-aware and set and achieve goals. The sessions are tailored to the needs and wishes of each NDIS participant.

Therapeutic support with Positive Moods extends beyond helping the participant achieve their goals. We also connect with the participant’s carers and Support Coordinators to assist with the daily mental health challenges.

Counselling sessions for therapeutic support includes:

  1. Individual Counselling

  2. Group Counselling

  3. Group Therapy

  4. Community Engagement Assistance

Each counselling has their own focus that could help the participant grow into a better person, develop their skills and become a great contributor in the society.

Individual Counselling

Individual counselling is a one-on-one session between the client and the psychologist to achieve the desired mental health outcomes. The aim of this counselling session is to help the participant overcome any negative beliefs or barriers that are preventing them achieving their goals. The session encourages the participant to accept and learn more about themselves, develop their skills and other personal resources.  This culminates in the best version of themselves and can prove an inspiration to others just starting their journey.

Group Counselling

In a group counselling session, participants form a group of three to join a peer discussion session with the psychologists. Group counselling sessions allow the participants to interact with each other, set goals as a group, gain valuable insights from one another, form friendships and establish a genuine connection with group participants. A group counselling session aims to improve the participant’s social and communication skills. This in turn helps them gain the confidence to participate in social activities thereby increasing their chances of employment.

Group Therapy

In a group therapy setting, various professionals collaborate to maximise support to help the participant achieve their goals. These professionals may include the participant’s other NDIS providers such as Art Therapists, Rehabilitation Counsellor, Social Worker or Occupational Therapist. Our psychologists at Positive Moods work together with these professionals simultaneously in a single session. Counselling sessions are advisable for participants who are already familiar with the process of overcoming mental health challenges and setting goals.

Community Engagement Assistance

Positive Moods aims to improve the participant’s social engagement in the community through group sessions between NDIS participants. This program helps the participants identify and set social and community goals, not just personal goals. The program helps widen the social networks of the participants through a variety of activities.

We also provide Psycho-Social disability supports.
